Villa St. Albans: an elegant residence in the heart of Christchurch
In 2011, a worried world cast its eye towards New Zealand where a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of more than 6 had levelled the city of Christ-church on the southern island of the country. Today, 12 years later, most of the “wounds” have healed, and traditional buildings have been replaced by new architectural structures. These traditional buildings include the former villa St. Albans that was erected in 1910. The architects at Radius Building went to work and turned the structure into a modern residence.

The villa experience begins at the entrance to the house, an area that simply exudes exclusivity. You enter the building through a cooper door and immedi-ately experience a ground floor where a puristic mix of cedar ceilings and interi-or walls made of Cerano concrete interact. On the same level, the ground floor leads to a garden equipped with its own pool, creating a chic feeling of space as you stride through the home. The indirectly lit staircase takes residents of the St. Albans Villa to the upper floor, where the main bedroom with its own balco-ny, two other bedrooms and a spacious bathroom await. The refined, custom-made furnishings made by Montreux Furniture create the very highest level of living comfort, forming a seamless bond between the building’s exterior archi-tecture and the home’s interior design.

HARO Flooring New Zealand was selected by the architects to be the exclusive supplier of the perfect parquet floor: Graeme Rodwell and his team laid HARO parquet flooring that is in a class of its own in the villa’s open living-dining area and in three other rooms. The Plank 1-Strip Plaza 240 Smoked Oak Markant brushed harmonises with the cedar ceiling and brings out the cosy atmosphere of this one-of-a-kind residence. The extra-wide board design creates a sense of spaciousness, and the hues of smoked oak produce a classic floor experience that intriguingly interacts with other aspects of the interior design.
As a result, the 104 square metres of HARO parquet blend harmoniously into the revitalised villa and its long history.
